Deadlock Soul Urn Explained

Highlights
  • The Soul Urn spawns after ~10 minutes. After that, it spawns every 5 minutes.
  • It can be picked up by any hero from either team. The hero who picks it up gets silenced and cannot use weapons, abilities, spells, ziplines, or teleporters.
  • The Soul Urn needs to be delivered to a dropoff point. The team that succeeds in doing so gets souls as a reward.
  • If the Soul Urn gets dropped for any reason (death or the carrier dropping it themselves) it can be picked up by anyone before it returns to its spawn point.

Much like any MOBA, Deadlock also emphasizes resource farming. In Deadlock, this is in the form of soul farming. Gaining an early soul lead on your opponent gives you a huge advantage. It allows you to buy items first and upgrade your heroes first resulting in a major advantage in terms of hero strength. The game has a lot of different ways to farm souls. You can kill troopers, enemy players, farm creeper camps, defeat the mid boss, or the easiest of them all: complete the Soul Urn objective. In this article, we’ll tell you all about how to do just that.

What’s The Soul Urn Objective

When does it spawn?

The Spirit Urn is basically a side objective that spawns around 10 minutes into the game. It spawns at one of the two altars at the sides of the map, either between the blue and purple lane or the orange and yellow lane. The location will be displayed on the map so you won’t have to guess it.

There will be an announcement in the game, saying “the Spirit Urn is waiting to be claimed,” indicating the urn has spawned.

The Spirit Urn also respawns at intervals of 5 minutes after the first one spawns. For instance, the first one spawns at 10 minutes the next 15, the 20, and so on. Each Soul Urn will have higher soul rewards. So if you missed one you can go for the next.

What is it?

The Spirit Urn Objective is a pick-and-drop objective. You pick it up from the altar and deliver it to the other side of the map. The drop-off location will be marked. The location will only be displayed once you or the enemy has picked up the Urn.

For you, the location will be marked as a green square, whereas if the enemies picked the Urn the location will be a red square. Once the urn has been picked up, all players know where the delivery location is.

Once delivered, the Soul Urn has a bounty of souls for the team that delivers it. It also rewards an Ability Point to the player who delivered it.

How to move the Soul Urn

All heroes from both teams can pick up the Soul Urn. It takes two seconds to pick up (or deliver) the Soul Urn. However, the hero who carries the Spirit Urn cannot use any abilities, spells, weapons, or items. This also includes ziplines and teleporters. The Soul Urn carrier does gain +3 Sprint Speed, and if the carrier is on the losing team, they get an extra +2 Sprin Speed.

If the hero carrying the Spirit Urn dies, the Spirit Urn will drop on the floor. Unless someone from your team or the enemy team picks it up, the Urn will return to the altar after some time. Carriers can drop the Soul Urn at any time and regain all of their abilities, spells, weapons, and so on.

Soul Urn Rewards

Completing the Spirit Urn gives you good rewards, which is why you should go for it in the first place. Every Spirit Urn is labeled with a soul amount: this is the reward you get for completing the objective. This amount scales as the game progresses, meaning the rewards will become much higher as you go into the late game.

Here are the rewards you get for the Spirit Urn:

  • 60% of the total souls are given to the capturing team. This is spread evenly across team members. The other 40% are handed out in the form of Soul Urbs. These can be stolen by the other team.
  • The hero that delivered the Urn gets an extra 25% of the pot, and an extra ability point.
  • Currently, the Urn also delivers extra souls to the team that is behind. Precisely how much depends on how far behind the team is.

The rewards are quite good considering this is quite an easy objective if you coordinate with your teammates.

Some Tips and Tricks Regarding the Spirit Urn

Of course, as with all things in Deadlock, there are things that you can do to make the objective much easier and rack up souls as you progress through the game.

Let the Fastest Hero Pick the Urn

Since you can’t use any abilities or items while carrying the Urn, it’s best to hand this job to the hero with the most stamina. They can dash or use other movement mechanics to get to the drop site faster. If you hand the spirit urn to a hero with low stamina, he will be easily taken down by the enemy.

Use Movement Abilities Before Picking the Urn

Although you can’t use any abilities or active items while carrying the Urn, you can still activate them before you pick the Urn up. For instance, you can activate Fleeting Boots and then pick up the Urn, giving yourself a small movement speed buff. This works works for abilities as well.

Another example is Kelvin’s Ice Trail; you can activate that and create a path, after which you come pick the Urn up.

Set up Camp at the Drop off Location

Another great tactic you can use it let the enemy pick the Urn up and guard the drop-off location. Then, you can ambush them as they try to complete the objective. This works especially well if the enemy is behind on souls, making them desperate for the Soul Urn. Of course, coordinate with your team beforehand, as the Urn carrier won’t be alone.

Bait The Spirit Urn

Similarly, what you can also do is camp the spawn location of the Urn. Wait for the enemies to attempt the objective and ambush them. If you can manage to send a couple of their heroes to the respawn screen, you will get a lot of time to make progress. You can make progress towards the lanes or complete the objective on your own.

Conclusion

To sum it up, the Soul Urn is an important objective, and it can turn the tide on the soul race. On the surface, the objective is quite easy, but things start to get difficult when you consider enemy intervention. At any moment, the enemy team can pop up and steal the urn from you.

There is no specific answer we can give you on how to get the urn a hundred percent of the time; it all depends on the strategy and pace of the game. However, after reading this article, you should know everything there is to know about the Soul Urn.
