Denizens in Deadlock Explained

Denizens in Deadlock are neutral non-player characters that spawn across the map. Their primary purpose is to grant Souls to players. Denizen camps can be found in three difficulty levels. The higher the difficulty level of the camp, the higher the Soul reward.

What Are Denizens?

Denizens are alien-looking creatures that spawn on the map. They do not appear at the start of the map: they start spawning after a couple of minutes of ingame time has passed. Once the player engages Denizens, they become hostile and start firing at the player.

Denizen Types

Denizens spawn in camps. There are small camps. medium camps, and large camps. Small camps contain the easiest Denizens, but they also reward the fewest Souls. Large camps have the toughest Denizens, and they (logically) reward the most Souls.

Once spawned, Denizen camps are visible on the map. Each Denizen camp has their own icon:

  • Small: a single triangle
  • Medium: a triangle with a line underneath it
  • Large: a triangle with two lines underneath it

Small camps start spawning first, after just a couple of minutes. Large and medium camps will spawn a lot later; currently at 7 minutes. Once the final Denizen of a camp has been killed, a respawn timer starts. Small camps respawn the fastest, whereas large camps take the longest time to respawn.

Small Denizen Camps

The small camps are easy to kill, and don’t reward a lot of Souls. They are indicated by a single triangle on the map. Small camps can basically be challenged at any time, as they are so easy to defeat.

Medium Denizen Camps

Medium camps offer around double the Souls that small Denizen camps offer. They are quite a bit more challenging to defeat, however. Medium Denizen camps are indicated on the map by a triangle with a single bar underneath it.

Large Denizen Camps

Large Denizen camps offer by far the best Soul rewards, but they are significantly more difficult to defeat than small and medium camps. Every killed Large Denizen rewards over double the Souls that a Medium Denizen rewards, so it can definitely be worth it to stage a coordinated attack on a Large Denizen camp. These are indicated by a triangle with two lines underneath it.

Unsecured Souls

One final important thing to know about Denizens in Deadlock is that they drop Unsecured Souls. Unsecured Souls are separate from regular Souls, and slowly convert to regular Souls over the course of the game. If you are killed before you’ve spent or converted your Unsecured Souls, you will lose them and anyone can pick them up.

As such, if you’re using Denizens as your main source of Souls, it’s important that you are careful after defeating a camp. You definitely don’t want to give your hard-earned rewards to the enemy team.

Conclusion

Denizens can be a great source of Souls in Deadlock, but they must be approached with caution. Firstly because the larger camps can be surprisingly difficult to defeat, and secondly because they drop Unsecured Souls. If you die before spending those Unsecured Souls, you lose all of them, thus nullifying your work. As such, Denizens should be approached with caution and careful planning.
