Souls in Deadlock – Everything You Need to Know

Souls are the main resource that you use to buy items and upgrade your abilities. Players need to farm Souls in order to get a lead over their opponents and ultimately secure the win. In this article, we’ll tell you everything that you need to know about Souls in Deadlock.
What Are Souls?
In Deadlock, players must upgrade their hero over the course of a match. You can buy new abilities, items, or purchase upgrades. This is a mechanic that’ll be very familiar to MOBA players: in both DOTA 2 as well as LoL, this currency is referred to as ‘gold’. In Deadlock, this currency is called Souls.
Simply put: you need to gather Souls in order to upgrade your hero. If you don’t gather sufficient Souls, the enemy heroes will become a lot more powerful than yours, leading to an easy victory for the enemy team. Having a Soul lead over the enemy team is crucial if you want to emerge victorious.
Souls are easy to identify and track. They are shown in the bottom left of your screen, and show up as Soul Orbs (more on those later) in the game world.

How to Get Souls in Deadlock
Farming Enemies
The most common way of gaining Souls is by killing enemy Troopers and other enemy forces. Much like in other MOBAs, dealing the killing blow to an enemy (known as ‘last hitting’) gives the player who made the kill a certain amount of Souls. The precise amount depends on what you’ve killed. A Trooper won’t reward as many Souls as killing a Walker, for example.
Other Ways of Getting Souls in Deadlock
Aside from farming enemies, players can gain souls via other avenues as well. These include:
- Killing the Mid Boss
- Delivering the Soul Urn
- Breaking wooden crates scattered across the map
- Exchanging health for Souls at Sinner’s Sacrifice machines
- Killing Denizens
Soul Orbs
Important to know is that, in Deadlock, a certain number of Souls will be released in the form or Soul Orbs. These are the little ethereal orbs we mentioned earlier. The catch here is that these can be claimed by anyone, even enemy players. Simply shooting these orbs is enough to steal the Souls away. If no one shoots the Soul Orbs, they automatically go to the original killer after ~3 seconds.
Soul Orbs that have been generated by a kill that your teammate made will glow blue. Soul Orbs that have been generated by an enemy player will glow red/orange.
Some Soul Orbs (such as the ones that spawn from the Soul Urn and the ones you get from destroying a Walker or Guardian) are granted to the entire team when consumed. The last-hitter does often get a bonus though, so plan carefully if your team is about to make a big kill.

Unsecured Souls in Deadlock
Some Souls that you can gather in Deadlock are Unsecured Souls. Note that these are not the same as Soul Orbs.
Currently, you can get Unsecured Orbs by destroying crates and killing Denizens.
Unsecured Souls are indicated on the UI next to your regular Soul count. They will slowly be added to your regular Soul count. However, if you die before the Unsecured Souls are added or spent, you will lose them and they can then be claimed by other players.
Players with Unsecured Souls will have an orb floating next to their character. The larger this orb, the more Unsecured Souls the player possesses.
Note that Unsecured Souls will be used last. As a result, you need to spend all of your regular Souls before the game starts spending your Unsecured Souls.
Denizens
Denizens are neutral creeps that spawn on the map. They can be attacked by anyone and offer Souls when killed. There are three levels of Denizen camps: small, medium, and large. Small camps are the easiest to defeat and offer the fewest Souls, whereas large camps are the most difficult to defeat, but offer the highest rewards.
These camps can also be found on your map: small camps are indicated by a triangle, medium camps by a triangle with a line underneath it, and large camps by a triangle with two lines. Camps don’t spawn immediately.

Crates
Wooden crates can be found across the map and can be smashed. They can then reveal a certain amount of Unsecured Souls that you can pick up.
Conclusion
Souls are the main currency of Deadlock. If you want to win the game, you need Souls to upgrade your character. Veteran MOBA players will already know this, but if you get behind on Souls it can be incredibly difficult to come back. As such, it pays off to always keep an eye on the Soul balance. If you’re behind, it can pay off to go for a risky push on some Denizens, or you could even go for the Mid Boss or the Soul Urn.
Hopefully, this guide has taught you everything you need to know about Souls in Deadlock.
