The Most Popular Fortnite Skins of All Time

Introduction

Fortnite has a huge cosmetic library that expands every year with new skins. From original designs to massive collabs, there are a lot of skins in the game. And with a collection this huge, some Fortnite skins are of course more popular than others. Some earned their place because of rarity, cool designs, or just because a big streamer decided that a skin would be their trademark.

The most popular ones didn’t get there purely because they looked good. They became popular because they had meaning, served a purpose, or appeared at a significant moment in Fortnite’s history. So, here are some of the most popular skins Fortnite has ever released. Cosmetics are subjective, so this list isn’t in any particular order.

Renegade Raider

Before the game introduced collabs and famous IPs as skins, Renegade Raider was the first Fortnite skin to gain legendary status among players. It was released in Chapter 1, Season 1, making whoever owned it part of history, as it meant they started at the very beginning, before the collabs and the popularity the game gained over the years.

Seeing a Renegade Raider in your lobby meant you were opposite a player with one of the rarest skins in Fortnite. Back in the day, owning this skin was considered a status symbol among players.

Note that we’re speaking in the past tense here.

Because that mythos broke in 2024 when Epic Games suddenly released her again in the item shop, ending years of exclusivity. The reaction within the Fortnite community was divided. Veterans playing from the beginning were rightfully angry. Whereas newer players were delighted they had the opportunity to buy the famous OG skin and be part of the game’s history, regardless of when they acquired her.

Epic did release an exclusive style to the skin that only those who bought in Season 1 could use, so the sense of exclusivity is still there, but not to the extent that it once was. Overall, Renegade Raider still remains one of the most well-known skins in the game though.

Skull Trooper

Skull Trooper has a similar origin story as Renegade Raider. It was released during the first Fortnitemares all the way back in Chapter 1. Similar to Renegade Raider, the skin didn’t hit the stores for a while after its initial release, making it a rare commodity.

That rarity then combined with the fact that one of the biggest Fortnite players of that era made it his signature skin. The Skull Trooper became the signature skin of Myth, and we all know the great rivalry between him and Ninja in the early days.

Epic Games eventually rereleased these skins as part of future Fortnitemare seasons, diluting their exclusivity. But they did release a purple style for those who bought it during the Fortnitemares.

Joltara / Backlash

Superhero skins did not climb the popularity charts because of any cultural impact, but because of their competitive advantages. These were skins that had visually smaller hitboxes and could be customized.

You can select custom color variants on these skins, which made them feel personal. You could run your favorite colors and design them in your own style.

But most players prefer the all-black variant of Joltara and Backlash. According to some, these all-black variants make it harder for opponents to spot you in dark environments like shadowed areas or in nighttime. They also visually have smaller hitboxes, making it so that the character blocks less of the game area.

Because of this, these skins became the de facto sweat skins in the game. Whether they offer any competitive advantage is highly debatable and most likely not true, but they are still quite popular among the so-called sweats.

Aura

Before the superhero skins took over as the default sweat skins, Aura reigned supreme as the sweat skin. Released in Chapter 2, Aura is a slim female skin in a simple outfit with minimal detail and no distracting accessories. That simplicity is the entire point. And it was 800 V-Bucks, so it was also quite affordable.

We have established that competitive players gravitate toward slim, visually clean skins because they present a smaller and less cluttered hitbox. Aura ticks every box: small frame, flat colors, and low price. No wonder she’s so popular.

Surf Witch

Much like Aura, Surf Witch gained popularity for being a slim and good-looking skin. Surf Witch was released in Chapter 2, and initially it didn’t get much attention. But, as with most of these popular skins, once pros and popular streamers started running the Surf Witch, it quickly garnered a lot of attention.

Surf Witch and Aura are widely considered sweaty Fortnite skins and consistently rank among the most-used skins of all time. That consistency across multiple years and multiple chapters is unusual, as most skins peak and fade as new content arrives.

Midas

Midas is one of the most unique skins in Fortnite. It was originally released as a Tier 100 Battlepass Skin in Chapter 2 Season 2.

Chapter 2 Season 2 is one of the best seasons in the game both competitively and content-wise. Midas was the main antagonist of the season. He resided in “The Agency” POI, which was the most contested drop in the game because you could get the Mythic Drum Gun, which was very overpowered. So, Midas had that sense of novelty, and the skin had a really cool gimmick. As you leveled up during the season, Midas, along with your inventory, would turn gold. It was a cheeky nod to the Greek Midas.

The character became so popular that Epic has continued expanding him across multiple iterations: Shadow Midas, Midas Rex, and ongoing variants. That kind of long-term franchise treatment is reserved for characters who have genuinely resonated with the player base at a level most original Fortnite characters never reach.

Spiderman

Moving on to arguably one of the biggest skin collabs in Fortnite history: Spider-Man. Fortnite’s collab model was working well before the Spider-Man collab, but this skin raised the ceiling for any future collab skin.

Released in Chapter 3 Season 2 battle pass, the Spider-Man skin, along with the web shooters in the game, set the bar for how to create a successful collaboration. The web-shooters you could find in that season worked directly with the skin in a way that made playing as Spider-Man feel like actually being Spider-Man rather than just wearing his face on a generic character model.

To be fair, Spider-Man was destined to be a popular skin in the game; he is one of the world’s most well-known and loved superheroes. Since then, the game has featured many Spider-Man skins from different pop culture iterations. But the original one remains on top in terms of popularity.

Lara Croft

An additional popular collab skin that has enamored both the casual and competitive players is Lara Croft. The highly intelligent and athletic adventurer was released in Chapter 2, Season 6, and has since been one of the most used skins.

She has a slim character model, making her perfect for ranked and competitive. Pair that with how iconic the character itself is and how well Epic executed her design in the game, and you have a recipe for success.

Focus

Focus arrived during Chapter 1 Season 9. She wasn’t tied to any collaboration or storyline, and yet she’s gone on to become one of the most consistently used Rare outfits in Fortnite history. Whenever there is an 800 V-Bucks skin that appeals to both casuals and competitive players, it’s guaranteed to get popular.

The skin features a primarily gray and blue color scheme that gives off a cybernetic assassin vibe: clean, understated, and built around a sci-fi minimalism rather than flashy details. In short, the reason for Focus’s popularity is simplicity and affordability.

Fishstick

Fishstick is one of Fortnite’s strangest success stories. Unlike traditional skins that became popular because of functionality or collaborations, Fishstick became popular because of its goofy design. It’s a fish with a fishing rod; how could it not get popular?

Alongside its comical design, the skin also gained popularity because of BenjyFishy, a popular ex-Fortnite pro. He made Fishstick his signature skin.

Unlike other skins in this list, Fishstick does not have a slim model or simple colors; it got popular purely because of its design and BenjyFishy. The pairing of BenjyFishy with this skin got so popular that the two names became inseparable in the community’s mind.

From then on, Fishstick became a character in Fortnite’s world. It has been featured in many trailers and promotional materials. We’ve also seen many variants being released over the years.

Conclusion

Across this whole list, you can see a pattern that tells the story of these highly successful skins.

The most popular skins almost always do at least one of three things: they signal status, they provide a (placebo or not; the debate will never end) competitive function, or they arrive attached to a cultural moment big enough to pull in audiences beyond the existing player base. All of these skins have at least two of those things.

And that’s just a small sample from the rich world of Fortnite skins. There are many more that we just couldn’t mention.
