Best Custom Crosshair in Fortnite

A solid crosshair is instrumental to having great aim in all shooter games. Most titles offer a multitude of crosshair customization options, such as the ability to change the colour or the shape of the crosshair. Unfortunately for Fortnite players (see: Fortnite Pro Settings and Gear List) it is near impossible to change any of your crosshair’s attributes in Epic Games’ flagship game, which leaves everyone with the rather uninspiring default crosshair in the middle of the screen. However, those who venture out of the game client itself have the ability to customize their crosshair in Fortnite by using one of the three methods explained below.

Firstly, it is important to note that you shouldn’t, under any circumstances, tinker with Fortnite’s game files. Some third-party applications could inject code into the game, which might result in an indefinite ban, so be mindful and careful when downloading third-party applications onto your computer. The methods listed below are completely safe, as long as you use applications, which overlay your custom crosshair in Fortnite, and do not mess with the game files themselves.

Built-In Monitor Crosshair

This is the safest of the two options, because your custom crosshair is displayed only on your monitor, and it does not require any additional applications to be downloaded. Not all monitors have the setting options which allow for crosshair customization, but if you have a mid-to-top range gaming monitor, you should be fine.

The settings tab you’ll be looking for falls under a different name, depending on the brand of your monitor, so look for keywords, such as ‘crosshair’, ‘overlay’, ‘screen assistance’, or anything similar.

While being the safer choice, built-in monitor crosshairs usually provide a limited number of customization options in comparison to our second method.

Third-Party Crosshair App

Most hardcore Fortnite gamers use third-party apps to personalize their in-game crosshair due to the wide range of customization settings available in said apps. Once again, it is imperative that you use an application that simply overlays the crosshair in Fortnite and does not interfere with the game’s files, so do your own research before downloading any third-party applications. An often-used crosshair app is Crosshair X.

Once you’ve decided which method to go ahead with, it’s time to customize your crosshair. Here are some of our recommendations:

Classic FPS Crosshair

This crosshair is most familiar to avid FPS players, where the simple, green cross is usually the default shape occupying the center of your screen. Its rather large size ensures you never lose it in the heat of battle and that you’re always ready for the next fight.

Small Dot

The dot will be most useful for expert builders, as it doesn’t take up a lot of space on the screen, which provides greater visibility and offers less distraction than a larger crosshair. It is also a good idea to pair it with a lighter color such as white, to further minimize any view obstructions and maximize building efficiency.

The Button

The most versatile of our recommendations so far, the button crosshair. Its name comes from its button-like shape, consisting of a cross in the middle of a circle. This crosshair is great for any situation and is pleasing on the eye as well.

Adding Tape / Using A Sharpie

The tape method is an old school way of adding a crosshair to your screen, and it’s as simple as it sounds: just add a tiny piece of tape to the middle of your monitor. This is handy for monitors that don’t have the ability to display a crosshair. If you opt for this solution, make sure to use a piece of tape that isn’t too sticky so that you can still remove it easily. Using tape on your monitor comes with risks, so be responsible when using this method.

In the same sense, you can also use a sharpie. As with tape, this method has some risks attached. Make sure to use a product that’s erasable if you’re going for this method.

Crosshair Sticker

If you want to add a crosshair to your monitor without going for the DYI approach, you can always order some crosshair stickers. These are specifically designed stickers that you can stick on your monitor so that you always have a crosshair visible. They usually come with multiple options to consider so that you’ll always find something that suits your preferences. Of course these stickers aren’t as customizable as a monitor crosshair or a crosshair app, but if you want to go the ‘hardware route’ with your custom Fortnite crosshair and your monitor doesn’t support on-display crosshairs this can be a good option.

Conclusion – Best Custom Crosshair in Fortnite

There are many ways to add a custom crosshair in Fortnite. Our recommendation is to first check if your monitor has a crosshair feature built into it and then move on to other methods, but of course it’s completely up to you.

Do note that it’s important to be responsible. Don’t download any shady programs, don’t use permanent marker on your monitor, and make sure to use tape that’s removable. If you’re not sure, it’s always best to err on the side of caution: you don’t want to ruin your monitor just because you wanted to get yourself a custom crosshair, for example.
