What is ELMB?

ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur) is Asus’ proprietary technology made to reduce eye tracking motion blur. It is a form of backlight strobing technology, made to eliminate any blur on the display by turning off the backlight of the monitor in between refreshes. Note that this technology can only be used at fixed framerates, such as 85Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz.

Intro

Modern displays, due to the way their technology works, suffer from ‘sample-and-hold’, meaning that frames are displayed until the frame refreshes again, i.e. the image is always ‘on’. Each pixel (which is what the image on the screen is made out of) takes a while to change in brightness and color though, even on monitors with the fastest response times possible. When fast moving objects move around the screen this can cause eye tracking motion blur, since the display cannot respond fast enough to accurately display the objects’ travel line.

Our eyes are tracking the fast moving object so fast that our eyes will be at a different position at the start of a frame vs. at the end of a frame. This causes what we know to be ‘eye tracking motion blur’.

The only way to combat eye tracking motion blur is by shortening the amount of time each frame is on screen. That’s done by (for example) producing higher refesh rate monitors, but also by what we call ‘backlight strobing’, i.e. turning the backlight off in between frame refreshes, thus shortening the amount of time that a frame is displayed even more.

ELMB

ELMB is Asus’s own backlight strobing technology. Provided your PC can reliably output enough frames to match the rate at which ELMB is working it will greatly reduce the blur on the screen with minimal side effects. Not much info is provided on this technology by ASUS, but ELMB does work the way it’s advertised and essentially eliminates any motion blur, which can greatly improve ingame performance in fast paced games.

ELMB or Freesync for fps games

Lars

They’re two different technologies. ELMB is backlight strobing aimed to improve smoothness and FreeSync is a way to reduce screen tearing.

I have an asus tuf vg24vqe 165hz monitor that has for normal and ultra ELMB my question is I activate it and if I go because it reduces the brightness and some functions, but I have heard that this option is enabled only with 120hz and I do not understand this if it is really enabled or should I put 120hz in the nvidia panel.

Thomas

I bought the ASUS TUF VG249Q monitor and it has ELMB, in the specs it says the monitor is 1ms mprt ( but it’s IPS).So i did a research and in a lot of forums some people say that need to turn ELMB on to be 1 ms and others say that don’t need to turn ELMB. Do you know if it had to be on or off to be 1ms?

Lars

Unfortunately we don’t have any hands-on experience with that monitor so unfortunately we can’t assist you here, sorry!

Should I turn on my ELMB on? I mainly play Valorant and CSGO but I have Fast Sync on since I get screen tearing because my GPU is producing more FPS than my monitor refresh rate.

Lars

It depends, to be honest. We recommend turning it on since it can make those games look a lot more fluent, but others don’t like the look of their games with tech like this enabled, so it kind of varies.

What about in valo can this setting is good or not? Thanks

Lars

Yes it should work nicely for Valorant!

Jireh Dennis Lozada

should I turn on ELMB or Freesync in playing valo? Thanks

I would gain performance in Fortnite with 120hz and ELMB enabled or I would gain more performance in Fortnite with 165hz with ELMB disabled?

Lars

If you ask us higher framerates are always better unless screen tearing is absolutely unbearable, but it kind of depends on what you prefer. We’d choose a framerate of 165Hz without ELMB over 120 FPS with it enabled for competitive games.

Dusan

Hi,should i turn ELMB on ehile playing csgo and valorant, and does it add input lag at all,and does colors become diffrent when it’s on.
Sry for bag english.

Max

It depends. Some like it off while others prefer to have it on. It can introduce a tiny bit of input lag but that’s mostly not noticeable. Colors should be pretty much the same.

Purple

Should I use ELMB it for Fast paced competitive FPS games. I’m using the Asus TUF VG259Q 144hz monitor.

Max

It depends, really. If you are finding that there’s too much blur you can always try to turn it on but otherwise you can leave it off since it can have an effect on the brightness and picture quality.

Hello

Is this setting recommended for cs go are not?

If you maybe know ASCR and adaptive-sync or named freesync is also disabled for best performance right?
Lots of thanks

We tend not to use this for games such as CSGO since it’s relatively easy to get a high amount of frames and motion blur is reduced to a minimum on high refresh rate panels. That said: you can always experiment with it as some people do like to have it on.

Johnny

You sure about that? I’ve tested 240hz monitors and there is still a great deal of motion blur in effect when the camera is changing direction fast. In that case ELMB mode would be better? I’ve never tested ELMB before but if it removes blur its going to be amazing in games instead of hitting that 240Hz.

Max

Well, it depends on preferences mostly. Some people prefer the feeling of very high framerates while others prefer a blurless experience.

Hi I have the Asus XG248Q can I run the elmb on 240 frames ? Or is it better with 120

Max

As far as we know you can’t run ELMB at 240 frames so we recommend going for 240 without ELMB if your setup can swing it.

wondercrack

XG248Q supports ELMB at 240hz

Irkan Zaitif Haider

Yeah I just bought it and it does support elmb at 240hz. Should I use it? Also in the osd of my monitor in image settings there is a option called od(overdrive). I am mainly aiming for competetive valorant and I was the best response time and low input lag possible so what level should I use in the OD mode? There are currently 5 levels, I think level 5 is overdrive but rather than that what should I use out of the 4 levels

Ahmed Alansari

Thnx for the great info about ELMB, cuz i was planning to buy Vg27AQL1A

But im not sure what to choose between The new Asus TUF Vg27AQL1A or LG 27GL850-B??

Chan

Is ELMB better than DyAC? And does ELMB have input lag? Thank you for your answers.

Max

ELMB doesn’t really add any sort of major input lag as far as we know. Most people on our staff prefer DyAc though.

Chan

May I know why they choose DyAc instead of ELMB? If I compare ZOWIE XL2536 144Hz with DyAc and ASUS VG258QR 165Hz with ELMB, what would your stuff choose and which one is better? Please do let me know because I’m going to buy a monitor soon, thank you in advance. ( My choice for now is : ASUS VG258QR as it has higher refresh rate and lower respond time. )

Max

I’d go for the ASUS in that case I think.
